01 / The exposure, in plain sight

On 6 July 2026, lightning over Mexico City delayed England's World Cup last-16 tie at the Estadio Azteca by almost an hour. It was not a one-off. France v Iraq and Mexico v Ecuador were also stopped, and severe storms threatened several US host cities. Each delay is a live example of the disruption contingency and event-cancellation policies are written against.

The rule. A lightning strike within 8 miles of the ground halts play. It cannot restart until 30 minutes pass with no further strike. At the Azteca, 80,824 fans were held under a shelter-in-place order.

England won 3–2. The match was delayed by nearly an hour.

02 / Why lightning is hard to price

Lightning suspends an event on a fixed safety rule, whatever the weather looks like on the pitch. It is local, short-lived and poorly captured by regional averages. Two venues 30 miles apart can face very different odds on the same evening. What an underwriter needs is the probability of a strike at a specific venue, in a specific hour.

The science

The timing is not random. Central Mexico's wet season runs May to October, and cloud-to-ground lightning peaks July to September, driven by Gulf moisture, altitude and afternoon convection. The Azteca delay fits the season exactly.

The model runs on high-resolution native lightning data, then aggregates up to clean 5km cells. The raw data is fine enough for the science; the 5km output is the format underwriters can actually price on, and it sits alongside event-safety distance guidance for a specific outdoor event.
